The change management process in engineering is the procedure of determining attainability, requesting, planning, evaluating, implementing and planning of changes to a system. The two main aims are first is to support the processing of changes and second is to enable the traceability of changes.
There are various reasons and sources for engineering change management. First is that the customers always have new requirements and problems. Second is purchasing to find new suppliers. Third is that improvement in functionality is demanded by the design engineers. Fourth is that a continuous improvement is implemented by production. Fifth is that rules are continuously changed by the authorities. Sixth is that new and modified products are demanded by the sales and marketing. Last is that the application problems are collected by the customer service and is expected that it should get fixed up quickly.
The engineering change management therefore involves typical activities. It does screening of every request from root causes. Then, order the chosen changes to be made by the different functions. Further, actuate the change management and tracks the change management process. Next, it notifies the changes by documenting all resulting consequences and activities. Lastly, manages the changes from a supervisory function.
There are various benefits with successful engineering change management and they are as follows:
- Change management consultants get time for value adding activities
- Constantly there is an increase in customer satisfaction as the customers perceive that their input results in improved and new products.
- Effective managers focus on innovation.
- Quality improvement becomes effective.
- Cost reduction becomes effective.
- Time savings permit every corporate function to focus on what actually matters.
In engineering change management the future trend will make it more complex as there will be an involvement of more locations. In change management process there will be more participants involved making it more complicated. There will be more requests for quicker engineering changes by the key customers. Also, there will be more market requests resulting in more change requests.
