Any self-respecting foodie out there surely knows what a big trend hot dogs have recently become in the United States — not that this all-American food was ever unpopular. The hot dog has been classed up and infused with creativity in recent years, and in 2011, it seems everywhere you turn there is a new take on the old standard. Whether you prefer the classic street dogs made famous in cities like New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, or love all the new takes on the original, you can find your fill of tasty hot dog possibilities across the United States.

Variety of Toppings

Many restaurants are now offering hot dogs with just as many different choices of toppings as have been more commonly offered for hamburgers. There are even some independently owned fast food restaurants that offer a “topping bar” for customers to garnish their own, customized dogs. The choice of toppings includes everything from the traditional ketchup, mustard, relish and sauerkraut to more daring options, such as grilled and marinated onions, chili, bacon, sliced pickles, salsa, numerous varieties of cheese, mayonnaise and other sauces.

Restaurants are also updating the old standbys, with toppings such as fresh cucumber relish and spicy jalapeno ketchup. Other restaurants are thinking totally outside the box and offering nontraditional toppings such as hummus, guacamole, tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, wasabi mayonnaise, crushed potato chips, grilled pineapples and tartar sauce — and the list goes on. Whether you’re a purist or a daring food fusion enthusiast, you can find your share of hot dog toppings to choose from.

The Emergence of the Hot Dog Renaissance

There’s no telling where this trend came from, but many speculate that the popularity of food trucks at the moment has something to do with it. The food truck offers creative cooks an affordable way to open a culinary business, which is especially conducive to young chefs who want to show off their new takes on fast food classics. A resurging popularity of classic American foods such as bacon and cupcakes also coincides with this emerging trend. Even health food junkies can get in on the act, as veggie dogs and vegetarian-friendly toppings are also available, for restaurant-goers and home cooks alike.

With so many toppings to choose from and so many restaurants offering their own takes on the classic dog, there’s no telling where this fun and tasty food trend will take us next.
